I am proud to welcome you to the 2017 Utah National Association for Multicultural Education Conference! Now more than ever educators must come together to provide a collective voice, visibility and stance for ALL students and their families. The sense of urgency for resistance and change that educators feel across the nation right now is palpable. I am thrilled that Utah NAME provides a powerful and dynamic space for such critical conversations to take place!
The conference theme Building Bridges: Engaging Our Communities and Families for Student Success ensures that students and families feel not only welcomed in our schools, but also become equitable forces within the institution of education. As educators it is our ethical, professional and human responsibility to use our privilege to create spaces of community engagement and social justice. The Glendale community showcases almost ten years of community involvement among the Glendale-Mountain View Community Learning Campus. Utah NAME is incredibly grateful to the Glendale community for hosting the conference and being a solid foundation for future generations to come.
My hope is that you will leave this conference feeling recharged and empowered to continue being passionate and active advocates for students, communities and one another. Authentic healing must occur within our nation. I strongly believe it begins with each of us in our classrooms. As intersectional human beings, it is pertinent that we strive to understand, empathize and organize to battle systemic oppression. The time has arrived to raise our consciousness and voices in solidarity!
Remember you live in a community. You have a responsibility to be accountable to your family and your community as well as yourself.
